27-07-2016

This building was erected between 1588 and 1591, in the location called by the native inhabitants of Lubań the Pit (German: im Grunde), to serve as a Latin School. The Chapel of St. George and the old school had been built earlier on this very site.

Nowadays, some relicts of the former chapel can still be noticed in its cellar. It was funded by the Chancellor to Adrian Albinus, the Elector of Brandenburg, who was born in Luban. The construction works started in April 1588. They were supervised by Martin Salin, a master bricklayer. The investment was completed in 1589.
Seventy years later, the roof and the upper floor of the building were burnt down in one of the greatest fires in the history of the town. It sustained another fire in 1670, which destroyed the top floor of the school. Despite both adverse natural events, the citizens of Lubań would always restore their school to its grandeur. In the early 18th century, it was significantly extended towards the Monastery Garden. The school was eventually burnt down by the _re on 14th July 1760. It took 12 years to reconstruct it. The present facade dates back to 1914. It the front facade, there is a stone doorframe with the year 1752, which dates the completion of one of the reconstruction works an adjacent plaque that commemorates the memory of its founders: Adrian Albinus and his spouse Anna Wigand.
